SpindriftA small busy town With a golden beach,
Nestled close to The patient sea.
The sand ceded To her implacable advances
And the earthworks Were overwhelmed.
The defences breached By foaming torrents and
The helpless townsfolk Loading their carts,
Watched the iron-grey skies
The sea-wallThrown up after the horse had bolted,
grey with a curved lip on top like a whale's fluke,
Broken, pitted, sandy steps
Made of cement, ground up granite and pieces of tar.
Sand encroaches from the sea,
Inching up the wall by stealth
Until the base is lost in grit,
And the sea shifts silently below.
SpaceOur human shells conceal black holes
And overwhelming shadows grow.
We hide behind the ripples of dark matter
Amongst the clustered waves of light.
But still the cold expanses sing
An alluring song to the tethered planet
And shivering with delight our answering voids
Dance close to their abyssal partner.
Well, eyes are wonky and too close together and I've added 10 years on her but apart from that it's okay. The woman in the original photo looked wise and self-aware and less sad than I drew her.
Original photo this is based on is copyright of Brandon Stanton

To depression, for creating days without endWake up to the realization that you've been awake
for seconds, minutes, hours.
You've been awake in this warm, dark room
and you don't know how long it's been
but now you're conscious
and it starts again--
the pain, strong and steady, in your chest.
You gain consciousness in this too warm morning
and your thoughts whir in endless loops
because it's either that or face the weight in your chest.
Light breaks though the window, soft and unwelcome
but you take it as a reluctant gift--
a new distraction from the feelings awake in your chest.
Awake, but not conscious.
So you think yourself in circles a little while longer
waiting for those quiet pains
(the constant reminder)
to gain consciousness.
